How to Cut and Light a Cigar
The goal is simple: open the cap without unraveling the wrapper, then establish an even burn without scorching the cigar.
Identify the cap
The cap is the small piece of wrapper leaf finishing the head of the cigar. Your cut should open the draw while leaving enough of the cap to help hold the wrapper in place.
Cut less than you think
With a straight cutter, remove a small portion of the cap using one confident motion. Cutting too deeply increases the chance that the wrapper will loosen.
Toast before drawing
Hold the flame near the foot without burying it in the tobacco. Rotate the cigar so the edge begins to glow evenly, then take a few gentle draws while continuing to rotate.
Slow down if it gets hot
Frequent, forceful draws can make the cigar burn hotter and taste harsher. A calm pace gives the burn a chance to settle.
